Vesuvius Day

Mount Vesuvius,
In 79 A.D.,
Exploded today.

Today is Vesuvius Day. Vesuvius destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae.  I think most people have heard about Pompeii, and I’d heard about Herculaneum on PBS (I only half-watched the episode, so I don’t remember a lot about it besides that it was about this volcanic event), but I didn’t know about Stabiae until I read it on Holiday Insights.  This one strikes me as unusual because it celebrates the destructive force of a volcano.

On a different note, I wonder about the day.  What calendar were they on?  Because I’m pretty sure it was a different one than ours.  So, I wonder it this has been adjusted for that.
