Lord, please protect me,
Forgive my sins and guard me,
And give me wisdom.*
“Lord — Protect my family and me. Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me an instrument of your will.” This is reportedly the prayer left at the Western Wall by one of the presidential candidates. It’s a simple prayer; straight-forward and to the point. I wondered how the paper got the prayer and how they know it was his; I’m not sure that it should have been printed in the first place. There is speculation about whether or not his people gave a copy to the press. If they did, I can’t say that I support that decision, and I would be disappointed, but not so much so as to deride the whole campaign. But, it seems to me that it’s unlikely that they did. The newspaper that printed it is said to have said they had permission, but they now say they didn’t. I think that if there was proof that his people gave permission, it would have been produced. This isn’t to say that someone couldn’t have given, but that if permission were given, then the paper should have a copy of that and be able to produce it. The fact that they can’t produce evidence lends weight to the position that he didn’t give permission.
I doubt this controversy is over yet, and there are several ways it could go. I can see his opposition using this against him even if proof is never provided that he wanted it to be published. And it would definitely be damaging to his campaign if proof does surface. But, I think it’s too soon to know how it will turn out yet.
*I know this isn’t the exact prayer, but I had to take creative liberties to make it into a haiku.
